BBL and Moxi are the two laser treatments people ask us about most, and they are usually asked about together. That makes sense. Both come from the same company, both are quick in-office treatments with little downtime, and both get recommended for sun damage. So which one do you actually need?
The short version: BBL works on color, Moxi works on texture. The longer version is below, because the right answer depends on what you see when you look at your own skin.
What BBL Does
BBL stands for BroadBand Light. It is not technically a laser, it is a pulsed light treatment that targets pigment and redness in the skin. Brown spots, freckling from years of Utah summers, visible vessels, and the general blotchiness that shows up in your forties are all color problems, and color is BBL’s job.
The light is absorbed by the pigment and the vessels, which is why the surrounding skin is left alone. Treated spots typically darken and flake away over the following week or two, and redness fades more gradually over a series of sessions.
BBL is also the treatment we reach for first when someone asks about rosacea. It manages the appearance of facial redness and visible vessels rather than curing the condition, so most people plan on a series and periodic maintenance. Your provider will review your history and any prescription treatments before recommending it. Our BBL page goes deeper on what to expect.
What Moxi Does
Moxi is a gentle non-ablative fractional laser. Instead of targeting color, it creates microscopic treatment zones in the skin that trigger renewal. The result is improved tone and texture: smoother surface, softer fine lines, a fresher overall look, and a reduction in early sun damage.
Because it is gentle and low-downtime, Moxi is popular with first-time laser clients and with people who want to stay ahead of aging rather than correct it later. It can be performed year round with proper sun care, which matters in a state where the sun does not take winters off. More on the treatment itself on our Moxi page.
BBL vs Moxi: The Simple Way to Decide
Stand in front of a mirror in good light and ask one question: is the problem the color of my skin, or the surface of my skin?
Choose BBL if you see: brown spots, sun spots, freckling you did not have at 25, redness, flushing, or small visible vessels.
Choose Moxi if you see: dullness, rough or uneven texture, fine lines, enlarged pores, or skin that looks tired even when you are not.
Choose both if: you see some of each. This is the most common answer. BBL addresses color, Moxi addresses texture, and combining them in one visit is a standard approach when both concerns are present. Your provider sequences them and adjusts settings for your skin type.
Downtime and Recovery
After BBL: expect mild redness and warmth for a few hours, then treated spots that darken and flake off over one to two weeks. Most people go back to work the same day and wear makeup the next.
After Moxi: expect a light sunburn feeling and some redness for a day or two, then a slightly rough, sandpaper texture as the treated zones shed over several days. This is the treatment working, not a problem.
For both, sun protection afterward is not optional. Treated skin is more sensitive to UV, and unprotected sun exposure can undo the result or create new pigment.
How Many Sessions Will You Need?
Neither treatment is a one-and-done for most people. A series of sessions spaced a few weeks apart is typical for both BBL and Moxi, followed by maintenance sessions as your skin and your goals dictate. The number depends on how much correction you are starting with and how far you want to take it, which is why we do not quote a session count before we have seen your skin.
Who Should Not Rush Into Either
A few situations call for a conversation before booking: a recent tan or planned sun exposure, certain medications that increase light sensitivity, active skin infections in the treatment area, a history of keloid scarring, or pregnancy. None of these are automatic disqualifiers, but they change timing and settings, and your provider needs to know.
Skin tone also matters. Some light-based treatments carry more risk for deeper skin tones, and an honest provider will tell you which option is safer for you rather than treating everyone the same way.
What About Cost?
Cost depends on which treatment you choose, how many sessions your skin needs, and whether you combine them. There is no single number that is accurate for every person, so we walk through it at your consultation before anything is scheduled. If a clinic quotes you a price before looking at your skin, that price is a guess.
The Honest Way to Decide
A page on the internet can narrow it down. It cannot see your skin. A skin analysis appointment can, and it is the only reliable way to know whether you need BBL, Moxi, both, or something else entirely.
